Augmentative and Alternative Communication Evaluations and Support
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) provides different communication methods for individuals who have significant speech impairments or communication difficulties. The AAC system can be used to supplement or augment an individual’s communication system.
The AAC evaluation consists of an in-depth analysis of the individual’s skills in order to determine what type of system would be help him/her be more efficient and effective communicators in the present and future. During the evaluation process, different types of low and high-tech AAC options might be used on a trial basis to determine the individual’s skills, interest and ease of use with different features. The individual’s team and/or caregivers will be interviewed to gain pertinent day-to-day information regarding the individual’s ability and need to communicate. A comprehensive written report will be provided at the end of the evaluation that includes a feature match of the individual’s skills with system/s the individual would be successful using to communicate. Recommended goals, related services and information to help gain funding resources can also be included if requested before the evaluation is complete.
